Maintaining Your Lawn Mower
Machines, like all other things mechanical in nature, are subject to wear and tear. Gradual deterioration is something we cannot stop nor prevent. Despite how good a person can be in taking care of things, machines he uses at home will conk out and retire for good in the future.
All mechanical equipment, like the handy lawn mower, we use at home are bound to conk out at some in the future. Having said that, we can add years to a lawn mower’s service life, or to any other machine for that matter. While we cannot prevent our machines to deteriorate, we can slow the effects of wear and tear and enjoy the services of our lawn mowers for a little bit more.
Prevention is better than cure and the same holds true for lawn mowers. Proper maintenance also equates to proper handling so as to prevent damage and decrease the chances of problem occurring due to some factors. Most people think maintenance only mean repairs.
One way of preventing malfunctions in your lawn mower is by drying it completely after its last job. A fully dried lawn mower is less susceptible to rust formation, especially in the fuel tanks and in the tubes. Rust has been a proven culprit in mechanical malfunctions and glitches.
Autumn is the best time of the year when you need to drain your mower of all engine fluids. That means you have to drain your mower of its fuel, engine oil, and and other fluids in preparation for the long storage in winter. That is unless you have grass that grows during heavy snowfall and blizzards.
Maintenance professionals and handy men often suggest that you need to change the machine oil once a year. Do so. These guys know what they are talking about.
The underside of the lawn mower also demands such attention as grass clippings accumulate in such areas, as clipped grass can render the blades dull. Also, there are specific parts of the lawn mower needs thorough checking before and after every use. Air filters, mower blades, and spark plugs must be checked before and after using your lawn mower and see if they need some replacement.
