3 Tips To Help You Grow Roses You Can Be Proud Of

Whether you grow roses to add beauty to your garden or for cutting and bringing indoors, follow these tips to get the most out of your rose growing efforts.

Be Sure that the Rose is Exposed to the Sun for at Least 5 Hours Per Day

Roses need long exposure to sunlight to be able to produce more flowers. So to make sure that your rose blooms more flowers in the entire growing season, you must put it in a place where it can get at least 5 hours of sunlight.

If you don’t have a sunny enough garden, you may be best to grow another type of plant. If you still want to grow roses in a place where they get only partial sun, just realise you won’t be rewarded with many flowers and they will be more prone to pest and disease as they won’t be as strong as those grown in full sun.

A number of species of rose can be cultivated in partial sunlight. For a list of roses that can grow in partial shade, visit growingroses.org.

Ensure Good Drainage

Roses grow better in moist environments and produce more flowers because of regular watering. However, they won’t grow well if they are drenched in much water. To prevent that, the soil where the rose is planted should drain well even after it is watered or after rain.

Leaving the roses submerged in water for a long time can affect their health. Aside from being prone to diseases and pest, the roses’ canes may begin dying back and the leaves may turn yellow and fall.

Avoid Planting Roses in Grass or Near Other Trees

If you grow roses near large trees or in grass, the tree roots or grass roots will be competing for moisture and nutrients, and your roses will come off second best. Roses are hungry feeders because they produce so many blooms and need to be kept well fertilised to produce at their best.

Of course, you don’t want your roses to be deprived of the moisture and nutrients they need for prolific flowering and better health. So you must grow roses away from grass and trees that may compete with them.
