Flowers And What They May Mean

We are familiar with the concept of giving people flowers to mark certain occasions or just to help brighten up their day. However there are a whole raft of meanings linked to certain types of flowers with some believing they should only be given to signify certain occasions. The most familiar one to everyone is the idea of red roses on Valentines day.

You are probably aware of the meanings of some colours representing purity or love however fewer people shall be aware of the significance of the colour blue. This can be used to show peace or to exert a calming influence in stressful situations. The blue does have to be a calming colour and not too vibrant as then it can easily flip into being far too much and is no longer calming.

One popular flower to send is the carnation. Within the carnation there are a number of meanings depending on the colour which you are sending. For example a white carnation can be used to mean pure love as well as wishing someone good luck then a dark red signifies deep love and affection for a person. If you admire someone then a light red carnation can be sent while a pink carnation is linked directly to the concept of a mothers love. You can quickly see that the meanings and symbolism behind flowers can be heavily linked to ideas and myths which go back into history.

If we quickly move to Asia and in particular China and Japan we can see that the chrysanthemum is a flower which plays an important part in their society. For Japan the chrysanthemum is seen as representing perfection. For the Chinese and Japanese it is the flower which is important more than the different colours that are available.

A sure fire sign that we are moving out of the cold winter months into a period of warmth and growth is the appearance of the daffodil. It should then come as no surprise that the daffodil is linked with a concept of regeneration and rebirth due to when it first appears. Many cultures refer to the daffodil for this very reason with them all dealing with the idea of rebirth.

Another popular flower is the lily. Different colours of lily can signify different things for example white means virtue and chastity while pink is more linked to wealth and persons prosperity. The lily is a very popular flower at funerals which is due to it being associated with the concept of the persons soul once again being innocent after death.

The rose should perhaps be mentioned lastly as it is a flower we all associate with the idea of love or devotion. We are familiar with red being used on Valentines day however other colours can mean different things. A white rose is given in order to show humility and innocence while a yellow rose can indicate a desire for friendship or expressing joy. Pink roses are more for showing your appreciation of a person then orange can indicate desire. Lastly a purple rose is used to show that you feel it was love at first sight.

With the number of different varieties of flowers that are out there you can see that this is just a small number that have been mentioned. It should give you something to think about for when you are next picking flowers for that special occasions.
