The Admirable Beauty Of Sunflowers
Since time immemorial, flowers have been used as a mode of expression for all occasions. We are bound to use flowers to grace all occasions from birth to death as they’re the best way to express your joy or grief symbolically. In ancient times gardens have been designed by taking into their inner meaning.
Giving flowers based on their associated meaning is becoming more and more popular among gift-givers and modern day gardeners are even designing their gardens based on what these flowers mean. Florists carry charts of flowers and their associated meaning and give these away at their shops.
Sunflowers, so called because they turn their heads towards the sun, are known to symbolise adoration. Their genus name helianthus comes from Helios or the sun god.
I suppose many of you know that sunflowers grow up to great heights?! But if you’ve stopped yourself from growing these Native American flowers in your gardens because of how tall they grow, you probably should rethink growing them again because they’re now available as dwarfs from heights of 12 to 18 inches.
The sunflower over time has undergone some alterations through breeding different varieties. They now grow smaller for garden use with more petals and larger ones.
There are also the double petal varieties and colored varieties. These colored varieties range from pale yellow to pinkish cream with the centre being brown or black.
Like many flowers, sunflowers also play an important role in nature, these flowers are eaten by birds and some other animals like the cattle. Their seeds are also a rich source of nutrition like healthy fats, fiber, vitamin E and minerals. Cooking oil is produced from sunflower and some of them also use them as dyes.
Try some sunflowers in your backyard or fencing and bring back the old sunny countryside charm to your garden!
