Doing The Right Maintenance At Home
Doing routine maintenance at home can help your house keep its value, prevent problems, and even decrease your insurance rate, in some cases. Prevention is usually cheaper than paying for someone to fix a large problem in the future, and spreading out the cost can help it fit into your budget better, too.
Many people schedule their maintenance according to what season it is. This is a good idea because thinking about what the coming months will bring can give you an idea of what needs to be looked at. Avoid not scheduling your inspections and repairs, because if you do, they might not get done. This can be costly and dangerous.
Preparing for cold temperatures and winter precipitation is your task before winter starts, or just as it sets in. This should involve making sure the carbon monoxide alarms function, since you will be closing all the windows and running the heater, and also checking on your pipes. Insulating pipes in areas where they might freeze is a good idea if you haven’t already done so, too.
Rain is common in the spring, and this is when you should be vigilant for leaks. A quick inspection as soon as the snow is gone can help you catch problems in their infancy. Since it has been running all winter, this is a good time to check the furnace filter, and make sure it doesn’t need cleaning or replacing. Prepare for summer by inspecting the air conditioner, if there is one.
Before using recreational equipment, make sure it is still sturdy enough for your family in the summer. Check on your decks, looking for rotting or stripped pieces of wood that need to be replaced or re-varnished. Repairs on the exterior of your home should be done now, because of the long dry spell that encompasses most summers.
Problems in the fall include increasing fire danger, preparing for winter issues, and more. Check your heating system, or preferably, have a professional do it for you. Make sure your carbon monoxide detectors work. Clean your chimney, if you plan to use it. Reseal any windows that need it, to save on your heating bill.
Keeping up with your maintenance at home will make sure you and your family are safe. It will also reduce your bills in some cases, and make your home more attractive when it comes time to sell. Maintaining things avoids major issues (which are often expensive issues), too.
