How To Choose The Right Garden Style

Just like with clothing, there are different styles of garden and what suits one person may not suit the other. When you are planning a new garden, giving some thought to the type and style of garden that you want is a must. A well manicured garden is what some people like while there are those who prefer a more natural look. Some people enjoy the peace and tranquility provided by a flower garden while others will enjoy the satisfaction of growing their own fruit and vegetables.

The amount of space you have available to you will greatly influence your type and style of garden. If you are lucky enough to have a large garden and if you live in a rural area, then dividing up the space and creating different areas for different types of garden is what you will be able to do. On the other hand, your choices are greatly reduced if you live in a city center and you only have a small area.

Another point to consider is the amount of free time you have available to maintain your garden. You may find that trying to cope with a large intricate garden is too much to cope with if you have a demanding job or a large family to take care of. For example, as as many flowering plants need continual dead-heading to prolong their flowering period, large flower gardens can be very time consuming to maintain and keep them looking their best.

The type and style of your garden may also be influenced by your fitness level. For instance, if you have heart problems or breathing difficulties then you probably wouldn’t want to be digging over a large vegetable plot each year. You may also need to consider having raised beds that you can reach easily if you are confined to a wheel chair or suffer with back problems.

The actual purpose of the garden is one other factor that you may want to consider.

Determine if you want to attract wildlife. Create a space for entertaining friends and family? Have a safe area for your children to play? Or maybe a peaceful place to relax? How about creating a productive garden to feed the family?

Remember that it is possible to incorporate different garden types into one garden when thinking about the style of your garden. A lot of vegetables can be grown in amongst your ornamental plants and have attractive foliage. Most of the time, organic gardeners will plant certain ornamentals in their vegetable plots in order to attract pests away from their vegetable crops.

We will take a look at 6 of the most common styles in future articles.
