How To Keep Gardening In The Winter

Given the length and depth of this winter it might be worth keeping up a year long gardening plan otherwise you may not get muddy for many months. Most gardeners turn to indoor plants as soon as autumn hits and don't step out on the grass again until spring but there are a lot of activities to keep a garden in use during the winter months which mean you don't have to sit indoors fiddling with your window baskets.

To get ready for the spring you can cultivate cover crops which will improve the soil for the following season and also give you something to keep you busy. Decomposing compost will also continue providing you with plenty of fuel to get going with your gardening when the sun starts to shine.

Greenhouses, cloches or cold frames are an understandable choice for growing plants during the winter. You can start by planting bulbs such as day lilies, tulips and daffodils in the late autumn/early winter which will possibly bloom towards the end of winter before the spring season even begins, so you won't have to walk out to a dull garden.

To enjoy colour over the cold months try growing plants in containers or raised beds in which you can control the temperature, the moisture and provide a better soil for them to survive the cold. These plants wouldn't normally be the pride of your patch but they will provide some activity and when spring arrives you can plant them directly into the ground and let them thrive.

If you are keen on maintaining the health of your garden through the winter it would be wise to monitor your composting and ensure it gets turned and has new organic material. This can be a valuable source of nutrients for any evergreen plants you may have but if not, will be a great resource for new plants in the next season when the compost has matured.

A variety of frost-hardy crops will make use of your soil and give a return if you want to grow some vegetables during winter. Turnips and other quick maturing vegetables can be an ideal addition which may not create exceptional results throughout winter but will still make use of your garden.

Choose A Rattan Outdoor Patio Set

Rattan is a cane grown in the far east and western Pacfic region, mostly in Indonesia but also in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Bangladesh. With a superficial resemblance to bamboo, rattan is durable, light, and somewhat flexible, making it both easy and ideal for fashioning into furniture. Rattan patio furniture has been popular for a long period of time and lends an understated tropical feel to any deck or patio, open or enclosed.

Many people mistake rattan furniture, patio and otherwise, for wicker furniture-at first glance. What they may not know, in fact, is that wicker itself comes from the inner core of the rattan cane. Rattan also accommodates numerous paints and stains similar to wood, and you can find it in numerous colours shaped into numerous styles.

But rattan patio furniture includes barstools and tables, chaise lounges, basic dining sets, and deep seating sets. The Grenada set offered by Rattan Shack is a good example. It comes in what the company calls a viro antique finish with anodised aluminum frams and includes frosted glass inserted into the table top, with stackable armchairs that do not require seat cushions, though many if not most rattan furnture seatings come with such cushions as standard features.

South Sea Rattan's Key West series features a sofa, a loveseat, a chair, and an ottoman, with cushions for all seats as well as the ottoman and a glass-topped coffee table. This set lists for $3,299, but South Sea Rattan is now offering it for $2,876.

Eho Studios's rattan patio dining set has the look and the feeling of contemporary art, featuring two chairs with rounding in the back of the seats and mounting extended from the front edges with no rear supports. The stands resemble sandal tops, and the set includes a small table with a slightly recessed top. You can choose red, black, or white seat cushions for this set, which lists for $1,579 but is being sold now for $979.

If you go online, make sure to visit Amazon.com where you would find a huge selection of rattan patio furnitures in prices that would suit any budget. One featured rattan furniture collection is that of the Anderson Colllections Bellagio dining set which is now worth $2,999. The set includes a rectangular table, different styles of chairs which comes with white cushions.

If you like sectional seating and have a taste for rattan patio furniture, Echo Studios of Minnesota makes a large, three-section rattan patio sofa with thick backs, slender cake-like seat cushions, and a matching round glass-topped coffee table. The set lists at $2,969 but you can buy one through several online outlets beginning at $300 less.

Garden Furniture – Selecting the Right Material

Garden furniture adds value to and enlivens any garden. A set of well-selected chairs and tables never fail to impress guests. Of course, homeowners should have more than aesthetic purposes in mind when selecting their outdoor furniture. Functionality is just as important as its style and visual appeal.

Garden furniture should not be picked out randomly. They have to be carefully selected and important factors have to be considered before you can get the right pieces of furniture for your garden or patio. One of the most important point of consideration is the material of your garden furniture. Remember that there are several kinds of materials, each catering to different functions and needs.

One of the most common materials is wood. Because it comes from nature, the material fits right in a garden and often gives the impression of style and class. Certain types of wood such as oak, cedar, teak and redwood are often preferred over other types. This is because these wood types are naturally resistant to fungi and harsh weather. Even so, these kinds of wood still have to be specially treated to make them last even longer. Moreover, proper maintenance has to be observed. Otherwise, wood will succumb to harsh conditions even with pre treatment.

Another favorite wood type is rattan. Unlike other hard wood, rattan can be woven to form different furniture shapes and more comfortable furniture styles. Just like hardwood pieces, rattan pieces have to be treated for durability. Most pieces are also made of more durable synthetic rattan.

Aluminum is another option for garden furniture material. Most contemporary pieces are made in aluminum. This material is often a favorite option because it is lightweight and is fairly comfortable especially when pads and cushions are used. Furthermore, aluminum is comparatively durable and can withstand natural conditions compared to wood. A disadvantage of using aluminum though is that time will eventually decrease the strength of its coating which can lead to irreversible corrosion.

If you are after portability, plastic is even a better choice. It is more lightweight than aluminum and more resistant to harsh outdoor conditions. Plastic usually does not degenerate unless it is intentionally damaged or exposed to too much sunlight. The material however can sometimes look cheap and can be difficult to clean.

If you want another natural look that fits right into your garden, stone is another great option. What homeowners like about stone is that it does not have to be treated like other material and it lasts longer and is more durable too. Stone in and by itself can resist damage. The downside to using stone is that it is uncomfortable to use without sufficient padding or cushion.

A final material to consider is wrought iron. Like wood, this material can give the impression of good taste and elegance. When made and treated properly, it can almost be as durable as stone. It is also a low maintenance material. Pieces of furniture made with this material though can sometimes be uncomfortable to use for long periods of time and can cost a lot.

As far as modern materials used for garden furniture, there are so many to consider. In most cases, pieces can even be a combination of two or more material, combining the aesthetic appeal of one with the functionality of the other. Choosing the right material based on comfort and durability is often the best way to find the most appropriate outdoor pieces.
